“A Day in the Life” of our County Floodplain Managers ….

TRUE OR FALSE?
Since I paid off my mortgage, I don’t need to carry flood insurance or comply with floodplain management regulations.
City and County
of Honolulu
FALSE with respect to floodplain management regulations. There are no provisions for waivers of floodplain management regulations. A flood variance may be processed for certain types of situations, but they are quite rare. Honolulu has not approved a flood variance since 2014.
Maui County
FALSE, all development within the SFHA must comply with floodplain management regulations. There is a flood variance process, but rarely approved.
Kauaʻi County
FALSE. All structures must comply with Floodplain Management requirements. However, flood insurance is not required if there is no federally-backed mortgage.
Hawai'i County
FALSE. The lack of a mortgage does not exempt the owner from having to comply with the Floodplain code. There is a flood variance process for special circumstances but they are rarely applied for and approved.
